Discussion time:  When I was in school, I was very much a "one story writer".  Every now and then, I might switch to another story if the first one hit a block, but generally, I never wrote multiple things at the same time.  After college, I continued very much in this same way, where I wouldn't even let myself think about writing something other than what my current project was (especially when it was exchange related and therefore time sensitive).

And then one day I took an arrow to the knee, I decided to write something besides my main project out of spite for myself and my arbitrary Highlander-esque "there can only be one" rules.

This did help relieve some of the stress of "I'm not writing AND I'm also mad at myself for it, so I'll not write even harder."  It also created a new issue where I have so many stories started but relatively few of them actually finished.

Which is a very long-winded way to ask:  what about y'all?  Do you tend to stick to one story/project until it's finished?  Do you hop from one to another depending on your mood/brain capacity/due date?  If you have multiple stories running at once, is there an order that you follow for when one gets its turn?  If you write one at a time, do you ever have times where other ideas try to muscle in on your time, and, if so, what do you do with them?

It seemed appropriate to post these seeing that it was WrestleMania weekend just recently.

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

The UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of "woman" is defined solely by biological sex (Whilst also mentioning the protections are still in palce for trans people), crowed over as vindication by those who you never want to see crowing, and leaving trans people in vague limbo whilst Government bodies look to rework their policies.

Pope Francis died at 88, the day after Easter and the day after meeting US VP Vance... coincidence? A Pope who, more than any before, shifted the boundaries in terms of seeking out the excluded and the marginalised and caused uproar when he said things like "If someone who is gay is seeking God, who am I to judge?" and permitted priests to give a blessing to same-sex couples. Not a perfect man by any means, nor as radical as some had hoped, but in terms of the inertia he was working against, probably more progressive than any would have dared hope for ten years ago.

Star Wars Celebration happened in Japan this past weekend, with many new projects announced

A live colossal squid was caught on camera for the first time and is as beautiful as you'd have hoped

And Doctor Who gave us "Lux", which I won't spoil further but was certainly different, in a good way.

Discussion time:  Since it's still currently Monday here, I'll pretend that's the case for all of us.  Please humor me, I have so little else.  Monday's can be hard for getting writing time.  For anyone working the typical officey/9-5 type job, it's the start of the new work week.  For anyone in school, it's usually the start of their week, too.  And for some poor fools, it's trash night!  It's me, I'm fools

BUT!  New weeks mean new starts!  So, yes, while it might mean a return to more rigid daily schedules, it might also mean that things are starting over.  The week's only just begun, so we might not have hit the "cascading unfinished tasks" portion of the week that frequently overwhelms writing plans later in the week.

So how does Monday land for you?  Are your Mondays usually more one extreme or the other?  Or are they somewhere in the middle?  Or maybe a secret third thing?

Di talks about science fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction on her Booktube channel BookishDi and is one of the founders of the SFF book and fandom discussion show Stitch & Bitch. She can be found on BlueSky talking about books, politics, and women's sports.

On Wednesday, April 16, the UK Supreme Court issued a ruling on the legal definition of “woman” that excluded trans women. This case challenging the Equality Act was funded in large part by JK Rowling, and she celebrated the ruling with a series of disgusting, transphobic tweets. This is just her latest action to stigmatize trans women and destroy their ability to exist in public life in the UK. Coincidentally, the same day, UK based subscription box Illumicrate announced a special edition of the upcoming book, Rose in Chains by Julie Soto. This novel is based off of her hit Draco/Hermione fanfic, "The Auction", the premise of which is Voldermort winning the war and Hermione being sold into sexual slavery to Draco Malfoy. But don’t worry, he’s a good fascist and treats her well enough that she’s willing to defend the nice Nazis (I mean Death Eaters) when their actions come to trial. Plot points and names that directly identify it as HP have been changed for the trad pub release, but at its core it is still Harry Potter fanfiction.

With Batman, with Superman, it’s not like I said, I’m going to make these guys cyphers for the worst of the worst of American perspectives. But I think there’s a reality that it’s getting harder and harder for people to deny that there are biases that are baked into the system. -- John Ridley
